Hass is an avocado with dark-colored bumpy skin. It is named for its originator, a mail carrier and amateur horticulturist Rudolph Hass. It is the most important avocado in the commercial market worldwide. In the United States, it accounts for more than 80% of the avocado crop, including 95% of the California crop, and it is also the most widely grown avocado in New Zealand.

If you plant an avocado seed, you will have no idea what the fruit will be like... The only way to have the true "Hass" guaranteed avocados is to graft a Hass branch on another root that grows well in your region. Hence, all Hass trees in the world, from Chile to Spain, are grown from branches of the original tree. That original tree was owned by Harold Brokaw who passed away only a few years ago.
