Complete Disassembly, Down to the Metal, Professional Restoration!
The full professional restoration process took almost 2 years to complete. It was very painful, and at times it was very hard to receive the monthly bills...
When the car was blasted down to the metal, some of the real problem areas were revealed. Listed below are some of the areas that required some
extra attention, hours, and money...
Body Work
- Complete Cowl Replacement! (known for rusting out on most Mustangs) Since they only sell a repair kit for 65 and 66 cowls, an entire good cowl had to be cut out of another mustang and welded in to place.
- New Frame Rails were welded in because the originals were dented
- New Quarter panels and doors had to be replaced
- New Shelby Window Kit had to be installed
- New Shelby Side scoops were added
- LeMans stripes had to be measured, to specs from Tony Branda (cobranda.com), and were painted on - using the correct gold paint code
Engine
- Adding the Shelby oil pan to the new 302 engine required some modifications
- Special Valve Cover gaskets had to be used for the Shelby Valve Covers
- The stock fuel pump could not be used, so an electronic one was installed
- The headers were also a tight fit...
Interior
- The Shelby Windows area needed special attention, and cutting of the interior panels, so the new Shelby interior panels would fit
- A 66 dash cluster had to be purchased and installed
- The Shelby Tach had to be mounted and installed
- A 66 Glove Box door was purchased, signed by Carroll Shelby, and installed
When restoring a classic car you will almost always run in to some unforseen costs. Anyone that has restored one will tell you that it requires a lot of time and money.
If you just figure 1000 hours (around 6 months of work) at a shop rate of $75.00 an hour, your are looking at $75000. Not to mention the price for parts...
